Unlock the language of kendama

Welcome to The Kendama Journey! Whether you're just picking up a kendama or looking to deepen your understanding, this glossary is your guide to the essential terms and concepts. Get ready to speak the language of mastery and flow.

The anatomy: Kendama

Before you even begin to lace a trick, understanding the parts of your kendama is key. We call the kendama itself "The Artifact"—a tool for focus, patience, and incredible skill. Let's break down its components:

  • Ken: The wooden handle or "sword" of the kendama. This is what you hold and where most of the magic happens.
  • Tama: The wooden ball connected to the ken by a string. This is what you're constantly aiming to catch and balance.
  • Sarado: The "drum" or crosspiece that contains the big and small cups. It's the central hub of many tricks.
  • Big cup (o-zara): The largest cup on the sarado, typically used for foundational balance and entry-level tricks.
  • Small cup (ko-zara): The cup opposite the big cup; slightly smaller to increase the challenge and precision required for catches.
  • Base cup (chuu-zara): The cup at the bottom of the handle. Don't underestimate this one; it's crucial for many advanced maneuvers.
  • Warp hole: A specialized hole drilled into the base cup to strategically shift the kendama's center of gravity, allowing for better balance in specific tricks like Lunars.
  • Spike (kensaki): The pointed top of the ken, designed to perfectly fit into the tama's hole (the Ana) for that satisfying spike.

The action

Once you know the parts, it's time to understand the verbs of kendama. These terms describe the journey from attempt to triumph, from practice to performance. This is where the 'Growth Mindset' truly comes into play.

  • Lace: To successfully complete a trick or a complex sequence. That feeling of finally "lacing" a banger is what keeps us coming back!
  • The grind: The repetitive process of attempting a trick hundreds or even thousands of times to achieve mastery. This isn't just practice; it's a mental and physical commitment to improvement.
  • Line: A sequence of multiple tricks performed in a continuous flow without dropping the tama. Crafting and executing a clean line requires immense focus and control.
  • Banger: A high-difficulty, impressive trick that usually marks a peak in a player's skill level. Landing a banger is a huge milestone in your kendama journey.
  • Tracking: Using your eyes to precisely follow the rotation of the tama (specifically looking for the hole) to ensure a clean and successful landing, especially on the spike. It's about anticipation and visual acuity.

The technical styles

Beyond the basic movements, kendama involves nuanced techniques and states of mind. These terms connect the physical interaction with the kendama to the mental and emotional experience of playing.

  • Honed: A term used to describe a kendama with a shape and "break-in" level that makes specific tricks easier to perform. A honed kendama feels like an extension of your hand.
  • Lunar: A balance trick where the ken sits horizontally on the tama. This trick is heavily influenced by the ken's weight distribution and the "warp hole's" physics, demanding precision and subtle adjustments.
  • Stall: Landing the tama on the edge of a cup or the "bird" (the ridge between the spike and a cup). Stalls require delicate control and an understanding of friction and balance.
  • Flow state: The psychological state of total immersion where the player and the artifact move as one. This is the peak experience in kendama, where time seems to slow down, and tricks happen effortlessly. Achieving flow is a key aspect of true mastery and a reward for embracing the grind.
